A Papua Passage and a Midsummer Dream of Pin Laurier
Philip Amory, a veteran trader on the Papua coast, returns to Daru after a voyage and recollects a distant memory of Pin Laurier, a wealthy New South Wales heiress, amid the sights, scents, and social codes of the Western Pacific. The narrative threads weave Amory’s past longing with his present trading life as he attends a dinner at the Residency and navigates the island’s social barter, where eggs symbolize status and connection.
