Larry Florea a 1970 draftee from Blanchester Ohio faced a military mixup that left him listed as a deserter for decades. After seeking a VA loan and contacting Sen John Glenn he surrendered at Wright Patterson and was moved to Ft Knox for processing. Maple Syrup Industry in Pennsylvania Faces Cold Snap
Pennsylvania maple producers warn that an unusually cold winter and late sap flow threaten a season already marking historically low output. Somerset County’s Mountain Meadow Farms, the state’s largest syrup producer, notes a six week season hinges on warm days after freezing nights. Experts say sap must be collected before bud development in early April. last year’s mild February followed by a cold March yielded a record low 44,000 gallons. Somerset accounts for over a third of state production, with northern tier and southwest counties contributing to a $10 million annual value. Workers began taps as a warm spell may arrive, but deep snow hampers accessing woods for equipment.
