Market data from New York and Buffalo dated February 27. Wheat prices for May and various grains, pork and butter quotes, cheese and eggs, potatoes and flour prices listed. East Buffalo livestock market shows cash cattle, sheep and hog prices. Buffalo hay market lists Timothy and clover hay on trucks with straw prices.
Fifteen head from Stephen J. Champlin’s Conewango Valley herd were condemned for tuberculosis by state inspectors and shipped to Buffalo for destruction. One carcass died en route. inspectors found heart and lungs badly diseased. Champlin had recently purchased many animals from the same dairy. Further herd inspections planned near Jamestown.
Albion reports three suspected car thieves found in Bessemer yards. They ignored halt orders and were fired upon by railroad detectives and Officer Will Spencer. One man was shot in the leg and captured. another fled, and a third escaped with the others in dense fog. A resident of Butler said they sought shelter in a car. The captured man later jailed and sent to Erie hospital. London notes Mrs Hurst ends hunger strike after 24 hours and is released on bail pending trial.
After an all night session and bitter fight over public building expenditures the senate passed the public building appropriation bill increasing the total by nearly 16 million dollars from the house bill. A Kern of Indiana suggested amendment barred building or site purchases for post offices in cities with annual postal receipts under 10 thousand dollars, delaying about 30 to 70 authorized buildings. The Corry post office receipts total about 30 thousand dollars per year.
