The Postal Service tests three day per week delivery as a cost cutting option amid a projected 1.5 billion deficit for the year. A federal judge halted rural post office closings, delaying savings of about five thousand five hundred dollars daily. 40 congressmen joined the suit.
Corry reopens the two year Experimental Pavement Marking Demonstration Program as the federal drive funds nine miles of street striping. The total seven county District 1 cost reaches 148000 with plastic crosswalk markings to be avoided next year. City officials note the state contractor laid stripes without full knowledge of local parking patterns.
Governor Shapp says he will not action against Egidio Cerilli, chair of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, after Cerilli's federal indictment for kickback charges. Washington AP report on President Ford's new food stamp regulations. The plan aims to cut over five million recipients and reduce benefits for another five million while adding about five million more to the program, with net shifts in eligibility, benefits, and required income accounting.
City administrator Robert Grice announced that a vacancy in the city administration will not be filled. With Marjorie McKets resigning for health reasons, the four remaining municipal employees will handle duties. The change follows new billing equipment that cuts bill preparation time, consolidating water and sewer billing. Jane Swanson will move to assistant to the city treasurer, taking over sewer rentals and the occupational privilege tax.
Jefferson Ohio testimony by two shooting victims at the Kingsville Sunoco murder trial suggests Preston Fayne Jr may not have fired the first shot or been the trigger man. Cosner and Andrus testified about the holdup at Interstate 90 Sunoco, with Cosner unsure who fired the first or second shots. The case also involves charges of aggravated murder multiple attempted aggravated murder and aggravated robbery against Fayne and two co defendants.
Clear Inmates At Attica. State Supreme Court Justice Frank R. Bagger dismissed charges against former inmates Thursday after special state prosecutor Alfred T. Scotti attacked the police investigation into the 1971 Attica uprising. He called the probe deficient and said lack of evidence prevented charging officers. The 39 inmates and hostages died during the five day siege ending Sept. 13, 1971.
