Corry Airport Authority President Clarence Wallace said the group will discuss a federal offer to fund airport expansion but is unlikely to accept. The authority prefers self funding and plans runway extensions using land acquired, with interest in low cost salt stabilized runways and all weather options.
J Collins McSparran state Grange master and Lancaster County farmer announces Republican bid for governor. He plans an intensive campaign across Pennsylvania after meeting GOP leaders and discussing issues. He cites education industrial development taxation and citizens rights as key concerns. Early returns show V K Krishna Menon leading over J B Kripalani in a closely watched parliamentary race. Nehru campaigns in north Bombay as counting continues through Wednesday. Congress seeks to retain national control amid mixed state legislature results, with 322 of 460 seats decided.
President Kennedy announced a 150 million dollar loan to Argentina under the Alliance for Progress. The White House said funds will aid economic development projects and purchases abroad to strengthen ties between the two nations.
The Corry Veterans of Foreign Wars will open its meeting to the public tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the VFW ballroom. The event will honor a 26 man firing squad and include a tour of the renovated post building, with refreshments after the tour and a presentation of the squad under Thomas Crags.
A weekend fire partially destroyed the 70 year old Charleroi Hotel in Charleroi town’s main business district. Charleroi Fire Chief Harry Mc Cracken estimated damages and suggested the blaze may have started from a guest smoking in a third floor room. The fire was confined to the upper two floors of the four story brick building.
Three skindivers died when a mud slide trapped them 130 feet underwater in an abandoned Kingston quarry. A fourth diver, who launched a rescue attempt, survived in fair condition. Names include Jack Lepinski 27 Wakefield Michigan David Lasher 32 and William Mills Sr. 45. Gerry Klemm 27 Kingston aided in the search.
Harrisburg AP report says Rev Lawrence and the State Policy Committee may back Richard Dilworth for governor before week’s end. One source says the governor ready to back Dilworth and Stephen McCann for lieutenant governor. Another notes the governor would favor Dilworth and predicts Dilworth endorsement by the party Policy Committee Friday. The governor’s office declines comment, reaffirming no change in position.
YMCA officials plan a chicken dinner at 6 30 p m followed by the annual membership meeting and final enrollment report. Campaign chair Frank Sturgis hopes to reach 400 cards. top worker wins the autographed Lou Groza football. William Leaby hosts with Rev. Elmer Ortner offering invocation. Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. arrives in Washington to receive honors as the first American to orbit the Earth. President Kennedy hosts the celebration with a White House ceremony and a parade along Pennsylvania Avenue ending with a Congress appearance. Weather disrupted initial plans.
U S Attorney General Robert F Kennedy urged Indonesia and the Netherlands to pursue a factual and rational approach to the West New Guinea dispute. He suggested both sides could sit at a conference table for a peaceful settlement, after meetings with officials in The Hague and Bonn. Kennedy, on a world tour, said he heard views from both nations and stressed the United States’ friendship with Indonesia and the Netherlands.
Corry 39 year old Neylon Neylon, returning from a Route 6 tavern, lost control of his 1959 station wagon at 3 50 am and crashed into a tree near the Corry State Police substation. He was treated for a severe head laceration at Corry Memorial Hospital and released. Damage to the car was estimated at 1500 dollars.
Russian news agency Tass reports Dr Leonid Rogozov, 26, operated on himself for appendicitis at 9 pm in the Soviet Union station in Antarctica on April 30 1961. The operation lasted one hour forty five minutes with two station members standing by. Rogozov recovered and left the station for six weeks. Planes later brought a replacement doctor. The image was photographed in recent weeks by a Soviet plane via New Zealand.
Lt Col John H Glenn Jr to address joint Congress session marking him among an elite group of generals.
