ERIE Feb 26 The wife of a soldier overseas was killed and the car driver seriously injured when the vehicle backed into a semi tractor trailer on Route 20 at Grub and Cemetery roads at 2 55 pm Sunday. Helen M DiPlacido 25 mother of a three year old daughter Marylan died of a compound skull fracture. Her husband Ser Louis DiPlacido was reported missing in combat in Belgium and Germany. Robert J Felix 29 of Erie the car driver suffers probable skull fracture and head laceration. he is a welder at Bucyrus Erie plant. Surviving are her mother and two sisters Joan Stora and Virginia Davis.
Russian forces drive from Pomerania into East Prussia and along the Baltic coast as reinforcements pour in. Berlin says 60,000 troops assault toward Konigsberg and Danzig corridor with heavy Soviet pressure and German counterattacks along the Samland Peninsula.
Ronald Noble, outstanding senior science student at Corry High, is named recipient of the Bouche and Louis Science Award. He may enter University of Rochester scholarships trials, with $500 yearly for three years, as exams are set for April. Noble specializes in chemistry and has served as a student assistant to Stanley E. Anderson.
Corry quota for the Red Cross War Fund is set at 17 200, up over 38 percent from last year’s 12 600. Dan Timberart, chairing the drive, urges individuals, organizations, and employes to increase giving as the war enters a critical stage in Europe and the Pacific. The fund supports aid to the wounded, families of service members, and other Red Cross services, with drives expanding to every district. Ivan Downey will give the invocation and Dan Taggart will preside.
An arbitrator was agreed upon by Ajax and workers after talks aimed at settling the walkout over last week. The specific arbitrator name was not released. The sides pledged to avoid work stoppages during the process and to address the existing diffs with a prompt hearing and resolution.
Three break-ins occurred in the city over the weekend with minor loot taken from locations including a garage and Crystal Coal and Tire Company on Maple Ave. The Esso gasoline station near Hotel Cory suffered an amateur entry with little loot. Gasoline ration coupons, a flashlight, and a steel gauge were left undisturbed. the money box was damaged but contained little cash. London reports more than 1200 American heavy bombers carried out the war’s largest air assault on Berlin. The vast formation moved over the German capital in a long procession as Thunderbolts and escorts supported the raid.
The Air Medal honors Sgt Harland P Pelton long reported missing in action. Presented to his mother Mrs Margaret Carhart and DL Gary by Lt Homer Lynskey of the 809th AAF Specialized Depot. The citation notes meritorious achievement as a navigational bombardier on an A-20 mission over Hay on May 6, 1944.
Allied forces report ongoing bombardment as Japanese troops hold two buildings in Manila.
