Walker Finishes Journey in Bicentennial Hike to L A

Mark Johnson, 23, from Ahoskie North Carolina, completed a 9000 mile Bicentennial walk for freedom after 416 days on the road. He started Jan 1 in Wells Maine, ending at Los Angeles state historic park with a small welcoming party including reporters and his parents. Johnson wore out three pair of tennis shoes and four pairs of boots during the trek.

Dangerous icy road endangers Sample Flats school buses

Bruce Bailey who operates three school buses warns he will not run his pupils over the icy and rutted Sample Flats road until it is cleared. He has diverted buses to a dirt route past Piccidilli Hill, noting a dangerous railroad crossing and a subpar bridge. Council Divot in North Hills Budget Sparks Debate

North Hills budget review shows 36,880 in capital requests for 1977 including 4,000 for new course equipment 1,000 for clubhouse maintenance 3,500 for a bridge 10,000 for driveway and parking lot blacktopping 10,000 for a sewer line and 6,300 for four golf carts The Golf Commission saved 43,000 for a possible new clubhouse with no final plans The council approved the budget 5-0 after questioning the capital list and noting no city funds fund golf course operations The Golf Commission warns recreational services allocation comparisons with Mead Park and other groups and the need to re-evaluate funding The city pauses on Mead Park maintenance and considers shifting budget responsibilities to reduce the golf deficit Also approved were contracts with greenskeeper James Becker for 5,000 and Richard Donahue for 11,750 for admissions building staffing.
