Babson suggests purchasing jewels and cultured pearls as prices swing with markets. He notes cultured pearls can fetch high value and warns prices for gems, rugs, and furniture rise and fall with market mood. He advises restraint now but potential for low prices later.
Real Oriental Pearls and Cultured Pearls Debate
The column argues against spending on so called real oriental pearls and conflates cultured with artificial pearls. It notes price declines since cultured pearls emerged, warns readers not to rush purchases, and suggests acknowledging labor costs in polishing and culturing. It urges readers to seek lasting value they can pass to children and grandchildren.
