Mr and Mrs John W Rouse of Wattsburg received word their son Corporal Paul V Rouse 28 of the engineers corps U S Army is a prisoner of war held by Japan in the Philippine islands. Boy Drowns After Ice Jam Destroys Footbridge

At Tamagqua Pennsylvania 13 year old Lamont Ssmittz Jr and 12 year old Billy Herring stood on a Locust Creek footbridge when an ice jam broke it. Smith drowned after being swept 200 yards downstream. Herring escaped by grabbing a tree branch and then helped save Smith before the ice separated them. Smith’s cap was later found in the Schuylkill River.
