Government land holdings rise across the West
Beginning in 1789, land was acquired by individuals while a vast state stake remained in government hands. A Senate Appropriations estimate valued government owned real estate at 22.5 billion dollars, comprising 214 percent of national land area. If the remaining 412 million acres were added, the share would grow by 64 percent more, over a quarter of the land. Eastern states show as little as 1 percent government land, but in the West the government stake climbs to 87.1 percent in Nevada, 70.2 in Utah, 65.2 in Idaho, and 1.3 in Oregon, with industry and development aiming to cut holdings and place released land on local tax rolls.
