Mayor Glen Miller appoints a two member committee and city solicitor to investigate an audit showing a $17 449.91 shortage in special accounts. Councilmen C A Duke M Leo Mulderick and Solicitor Walter H Scott assigned to review the auditor's report.
Harrisburg reports county CWA administrators will begin tapering staff starting March 2 with layoffs targeting the least needed workers. Township road projects are prioritized for cutbacks, wages rise to prevailing Click rates but not below 40 cents per hour, urban staff kept 24 hours weekly, rural 10 hours, and staggered schedules forbidden. Continuous local and state projects may proceed without resubmission of project amounts.
During a regular council meeting Mayor Glen Quiller rebutted Journal claims about the city treasurer charges. The special audit report shows assets and liabilities totaling 190 076 27 with recommendations for engineering appraisals and improved minute records.
Corry Water Company repair crews work on service lines and mains frozen by a cold wave. An 85 degree local water temperature shows frost depth. Washington school remains without water since Sunday with classes cut back. A thawing device is being tested as crews aim to reopen frozen lines amid ongoing concerns for weeks. In other news General William Mitchell urged continued use of air boats by the government.
A northeastern cold wave and blizzard caused 15 deaths across the region. Two boats grounded off Massachusetts, a ship distressed in Long Island Sound, and a hospital fire in Brookville Pa killed ten bedridden residents. New York faced four foot drifts and a major traffic tie up delaying the stock and curb exchanges. Temperature fell to 9 degrees above zero, tying a February low.
In Washington on February 20 Congress opened hearings and moved to strengthen crime statutes. Senate Judiciary Chair Henry Ashurst pledged rapid action on bills targeting kidnapping and racketeering, with Justice Department proposals to back a broad offensive. Proposals include taxing firearms makers, criminalizing use of phones for extortion, and tightening habeas corpus and bank robbery provisions.
Harrisburg February 20 As Governor Pinchot forms a commission to study deputy sheriff employment the group meets in Pittsburgh area with Secretary J P Shelloo and officials from the University of Pennsylvania and University of Pittsburgh to plan hearings. The panel will hear from coat companies and labor representatives ahead of public sessions in March.
Westley, city treasurer, received word from the Erie county commissioners that he has been re appointed collector of state and county taxes in Carry City and another town. Min Westley has satisfactorily handled the county tax collection for years and supporters applaud his re appointment.
Coast guards on land and sea battled a savage winter gale to rescue 25 to 30 men aboard the freighter Northern Sword stranded on a rocky ledge near Winthrop Head. The 2643-ton vessel lay in six to eight feet of water as blizzard conditions raged and towering surf battered the coast. Commander J A Starr reported the master had two lifeboats ready and crews worked to land the crew amid dangerous seas.
In Washington the threat of a presidential veto did not derail a House move on the Patman soldier bonus bill. Speaker Rainey announced a March 12 vote after reaching the required 145 petition signatures, while President Roosevelt opposed immediate payment of 2.4 billion in bonuses and would not approve any such legislation at this time.
Senate panel leader Hugo Black charged that in August 1930 former President Hoover ordered all transcontinental airmail bids sent to the attorney general for examination. Walter Brown denied recall of the order as bids from Trans Continental and Western Air Express and United Aviation were considered. a contract went to TWA though United was the low bidder.
John McGraw, former manager of the New York Giants, is gravely ill with uremia but spent a comfortable night with attendants at New Rochelle hospital reporting his condition as steadier today.
Army mail and passenger service faced weather delays today with the Newark New Jersey airport section still causing disruptions. Officials reported planes of the route stalling on the field due to drifting snow while crews worked to clear runways and resume operations toward a noon target.
A Brookville fire tragedy reports multiple Civil War veterans and their kin among the dead and injured. Survivors include Mary Gannon Sunbury and Margaret Perry Grove City, with others listed as burned or missing across Pennsylvania towns such as Reynoldsville, Scranton, and DuBois.
Washington February 20 A probe into income tax returns of airplane and engine makers follows Roosevelt executive order granting the House naval affairs sub committee access to treasury records. The inquiry aims to check contracts with the Navy to see if profits were excessive and asks Morgenthau to provide tax returns of all firms producing or selling biplanes engines motors and related parts for Navy business since 1921.
United States Works Administrator Harry L. Hopkins announced allotments totaling 30.605 million dollars for 48 states and the District of Columbia for new commitments other than payrolls from February 15 to program end. Allocations cover materials team hire track equipment and purchases with maximum federal funds. states listed include Pennsylvania 1.62 million Ohio 2.0 million West Virginia 0.5 million.
Fire at the Brookville infirmary of Penn’s Memorial Hall traps Civil War veterans. Survivors recount the blaze as the structure’s frame is destroyed and several are believed suffocated in the deadly hospital fire.
United Press reports a fire at the Pennaylvinik Memorial Hall hospital in Brookville Pennsylvania on February 20. Ten aged women veterans from the Gulf War were burned to death in their beds as defective wiring triggered the blaze within an hour. Smoke thwarted rescuers and fire crews as entrances were blocked and the frame structure burned.
Helena Sutley of Tionesta, a half sister of Mrs. Harry Youngk of Corry, died in the Brookville fire. Inmates were trapped as zero temperatures and smoke hampered rescue. five hospital evacuees were saved to neighbors' homes while the brick main building was not endangered.
