Veterans Hospital Program Cuts Planned for 90 New Facilities

Communities protest as the Veterans Administration shields 90 planned VA hospitals. Of these, two are abandoned and fourteen reduced from the original plan. The South bears twelve eliminations, the Middle West five, the Southwest three, the West two, and the East two. The effort, ordered by President Truman, aims to save 279 million dollars from 1.2 billion in authorized construction, while remaining hospitals will cost more than anticipated. VA Administrator Gray cites staffing shortages and postwar hospital transfers as factors, with about 126 of 120,000 current beds in use for disabled veterans and 1,000 beds in non-VA hospitals via special arrangements.
