Marines Establish Secure Beachhead Invasion Details
An Associated Press report from Pacific Area headquarters describes the invasion of Iwo Jima, noting Japan jitter about a sea blitz and potential invasion of Japan itself. Iwo Jima features two active volcanic formations Sukibachi Yama and Moto Yama with a narrow lowland connection and rugged defenses. The main airfield on the southern end supports three runways in a triangle for heavy bombers, with ships unloading offshore by lighters. The 1943 Japanese population was 1,091. This marks Marines on hostile soil for the first time in the war.
