Corry Receives $6000 More In Fuels Tax Allocation
Corry will receive $24,344 in the state liquid fuels tax for the current year up from $18,000 last year. Allocation is based on population 7,744 and 29.14 miles of eligible road, excluding about 12 miles of state highways. Municipal use must allocate 25 percent to construction or reconstruction, the rest for maintenance. The increase provides extra leeway in the general fund since 75 percent can cover items already in the budget. The Corry Joint Committee will meet on Monday February 26 to act on a request from the local Pennsylvania State Education Association for a day off to demonstrate. Dr John Mohr and William Kafferlin represented the committee with Supt Ray Elsen meeting PSEA's Max Bennink and Harry Barkham at 6 pm yesterday. Bennink and Barkham urged a March 4 no school day as part of a statewide plan to pressure lawmakers for higher teacher salaries. The committee may juggle the calendar or deny the request, while the local group supports the state plan but is not militant. The effort aims to meet Harrisburg legislators with statewide salary-raise requests. Bennink said PSHEA membership includes all but 13 Corry teachers.
