All Weather Highway Across State Looms in Plan
Harrisburg February 17 United Press Andrew Carnegie's ambitious plan for a self liquidating twenty first century all weather turnpike would connect Pittsburgh and Philadelphia at an estimated cost of 50 to 100 million dollars. Gov. George H. Baile proposed immediate construction from Pittsburgh to Carlisle with private financing and tolls to fund the project. Three financial houses already expressed willingness to finance. a legislative bill to create a turnpike commission would seek federal aid but not be necessary. The study traced feasibility of reusing tunnels and fills from the 1885 ill fated South Penn railroad, surveying 209 miles through Cumberland Franklin Huntingdon Fulton Bedford Somerset and Westmoreland. If revived the route could ease mountain climbs and save gasoline, with Carnegie steel and Vanderbilt capital backing the plan.
