United Press reports in Washington that an elusive auto thief was finally captured by police and pleaded guilty in county court. The article notes the case follows a lengthy pursuit and the defendant faces sentencing on multiple charges.
Corry Credit Exchange members are urged to attend a Wednesday dinner meeting at Hotel Corry to set the year’s program. Police from nearby towns hunt for two armed bandits who robbed eight passengers on the Atlanta West Point Railroad fast train near Newnan. One man, about 95, wore a gray hat and overcoat with a mask, collected cash estimated at 400 to 500 dollars, then fled west of town after signaling an automobile with a switch cord.
A blaze at a five story Clinton Street tenement in New York today killed three residents and injured eight more as smoke and flames overwhelmed inmates. A baby carriage in a lower hallway is cited as the possible ignition source, with Mrs Manns age 60 and Mrs. Rachel Rosen 38 among the deceased and several men identified among the injured. Fire authorities believe the fire may be incendiary and are continuing investigation.
The city council, considering a monthly rather than semi monthly schedule, found little of importance to address at last evening’s meeting. W. F. Miller, prominent local pharmacist, opens a laboratory in the Rogers block adjoining Lanston store on North Center street and will maintain Cosmos Chemical Company operations. The firm will manufacture about fifty medical and toilet preparations including Cosmoquent and related items. Miller’s sons Preterich and Richard will join in expanding Cosmos into retail and wholesale business.
The Commerce Department reported that U S exports in January were 240 million dollars, down from 410.8 million a year earlier, while imports at 183 million were below 311 million the year before. The seven months ending January saw exports drop by 1.01 billion and imports fall by 916.0 million.

Dr. John Weibel, Erie guard on the undefeated 1924 Notre Dame team known as the Four Horsemen, dies in Mercy Hospital after an appendectomy. A Notre Dame graduate and former Vanderbilt intern, he coached at Duquesne with Elmer Layden and later returned to Pittsburgh for his medical career.
Nils Kivelyn Kramer art supervisor to Corry Public Schools spoke to Rotary Club members during today’s luncheon at the Hotel Corry. Miss Kramer outlined her work in the school setting as a guest of the club. Dr High Ofmre of this city attended as a guest.
Charles Perry twenty of Cory pleaded guilty to larceny of automobiles and was sentenced to two years in the Allegheny workhouse by Judge Bouton at Erie county court. Perry admitted stealing vehicles belonging to R Dewey superintendent of schools and Dr N Troy Gillette, was captured near Hydetown after slipping from officers, and had evaded a highway patrolman at Pleasantville. The case traces back to a prior theft of the Dewey car and a later attempt to flee by car, with officers pursuing from Hydetown toward Wast Troy before Perry seized the Gillette vehicle.
Senator Moses and Representative N. H. Hayes met President Hoover at the White House in an early call. Moses said polls showed the administration would face two key Senate votes and that an appropriation bill for veterans loan would pass by March 4 if supported.

Lieut Archie W Thompson Post VFW will sponsor a Fourth of July celebration in the city. Committees for the event have been named. A committee to lead the celebration was formed but the post postponed entertainment unless for relief work. The drum and bugle corps will travel to Meadville for the opening of a new VFW post with rehearsals scheduled Wednesday through Friday. Comrade Boyle reports progress on the rifle camp. The staff committees stayed busy with numerous cold and grippe cases. Comrades McWilkie and Thornton, Jonnie Billy Simpson Pearl of Erie, gave talks followed by a file feed for all attendees.
Madrid report says Sanchez Guerra abandoned his effort to form a cabinet to replace Premier Berenguer who resigned. He urged King Alfonso to appoint Melquiades Alvarez, leader of the reformist party, to form a new government with constitutional limits on royal power. The collapse shocks as Guerra had claimed a completed cabinet. Everything now depends on the king.
Members of Clarence Commanders No 51 Knights Templar will host an official visit at Masonic Temple tonight led by Right Eminent Sir James H Chickering Grand Commander of Pennsylvania. Visiting officers include Deputy Grand Commander Clyde Love and others from Harrisburg Meadville and Franklin. The evening features Temple degree ceremonies followed by a social session and a large turnout is expected.

A Pennsylvania man, Joseph G Mellinger, 46, commits suicide at a relative’s home amid injury-related despair.
Washington Feb 17 Senate delegates press for immediate action on the four and one half percent loan bill. House passage was 308 to 39 with mostly Republicans opposing. Senate factions debate hearings while predicting a swift vote to pass the measure over any presidential veto.
Six persons, all of them men, including two women, are reported dead today in Chesterstown Mi from poison liquor. Authorities say four others were hospitalized with illnesses from the same substance.
