Four people were injured when a Youngsville woman lost control on ice and struck guard rails near Wattsburg Route 89. Charlotte Williams Peck sustained a fractured right arm, her three year old son suffered facial lacerations, and Clark Hartley and Glara Hartley also endured injuries. All were transported to Corry Memorial Hospital and treated before release.
Philadelphia February reports two brothers William McGrannery aged nine and Michael aged seven drowned after breaking through ice on Cobbs Creek. A passing truck driver helped pull them ashore after breaking the ice himself. A 20 year old bystander Nicholas Fantomi stopped his truck on hearing screams and aided in locating one body. artificial respiration was attempted but failed.
FBI agents arrested ten former members of the Ku Klux Klan in Fair Bluff North Carolina on kidnapping charges. Victims Dorothy Marlin 27 and Ben Grainger 40 were described as white and abducted by the group described as moral persuaders. Authorities said the kinvern was disbanded and the case aims to curb violent extremist activity in the area.
Fireball shoots about 150 feet into the air as a new Leidy Field gas well near Renovo, Pennsylvania erupts in flames. Texas expert Paul Adair is en route to control the blaze, with officials estimating daily gas losses of about a quarter of a million dollars while authorities await valve, nitroglycerine, and head upgrades to halt the blaze. No injuries reported.
A gas furnace explosion at the Crosby residence in Spardaunbuey destroyed a roomful of furniture and breached walls. Ten adults and four children were inside. Harold and Byetyei helped evacuate the others as debris and plaster rained down. Residents and rescuers moved occupants to safety while fire crews battled the blaze.
At 9 08 p m city police met an Erie Railroad train from Jamestown to remove James Bennett 18 who fled home and planned to go to Chicago. He was carrying his mother's valkroad pass and three Warren youths were later taken into custody at the Rex Theatre as police and state troopers checked on Michael Turner Leroy Hichhouse and Robert Pierce. Parents located the trio later the same evening after a bus ticket purchase was noted.
In Munsan Korea on February 16 the UN Command vetoed the Communist proposal for a top level Korean peace conference and for an international inspection team. The Red plan sought a three nation supervision and a halt to foreign troops while possible talks resumed. Both sides indicated openness to non-Korean inspectors Switzerland Norway and Sweden if approved by both sides.
Robert Auer, former Corry resident, son of Mr and Mrs Walter Miler, is recovering at Gettysburg MI hospital after being struck by stray bullets while hunting near Maryland community. Bullets described as soft nose type, not permitted, prompting Maryland game officials to investigate. Auer has lived in Gettysburg area for four years. Assemblyman to retire in Blair County. Rep Raymond Sollenberger plans to devote more time to education after retirement. He has served in the state legislature.
