Fear Of Gas Passes Returns Home In Alabama Train Derailment

About 200 residents in three central Alabama farming communities fled after a Southern Railway freight train derailed and officials warned of cyanide gas. Troopers later announced the cyanide did not escape and residents could return. Investigators found two tank cars with volatile substances on a burning trestle. A massive explosion lit the area as evacuation began. Du Pont experts later said the explosion involved a natural gas laden car, not cyanide. An all clear was issued around six hours after the evacuation started.
