Jury Hung In Erie Riot Trial
The jury in Benny Wall’s riot trial on Erie’s eastside last summer was deadlocked after seven hours and 20 minutes of deliberations. Judge Lindley R. McClelland declared a hung jury and dismissed it around 10:20 p.m. Wall, 24, of Erie, is to be retried likely during a future county term. The night featured a scuffle outside the courtroom, a sealed verdict to be read today, heightened tensions, and a police presence as the all white jury of seven men and five women faced potential outbursts from a group of about 30 in the hallway. Wall is accused of taking part in the July 19 stoning of a taxicab near Eighth Street and Holland after a night of racial unrest.
