MEADVILLE A stepped up campaign to promote a harness tire track at Conneaut Lake was reported yesterday by an officer of Conneaut Lake Raceway Inc. Attorney Kenneth Rice denied dropping petitions or plans for the track and said 6 000 signatures have been secured with aims of 10 000 to 15 000. A charter for the local group was granted after corrections to an initial application. At Stone Methodist Church Rev Dr Bruce L Middaugh warned that benefits of racetrack betting must be weighed against the costs as the church’s Official Board opposed any track involving gambling.
Edward McMunn about 40 visiting Mrs Betty Babcock in Union City died from smoke inhalation after a coal stove chimney started a fire on the second floor. Fire damaged the building about $1000. Fireman Bernard Kiehart was treated for smoke, both deaths ruled accidental. McMunn lived in Erie. the scene was Union City.
Daryl Chessman 38 seeks en banc review of a denial by Chief Judge Chambers as he faces a Friday execution in the San Quentin gas chamber. The case stems from 1948 kidnapping robbery and sex crimes in Los Angeles. Justice Black previously refused a stay, finding no substantial federal question.
