Syncom Roars Into Orbit Continues from Page One
Syncom, an 86 pound Hughes aircraft satellite, launched high above the equator between Madagascar and East Africa, aimed to boost its speed to match Earth's rotation at about 6 870 miles per hour. Ground commands would fire hydrogen peroxide jets to drift the craft westward to a stay point between South America and Africa for two weeks. Limited tests to start five days after launch with full orientation over the South Atlantic. Principal sound stations included Lakehurst and Lagos Harbor. Syncom seeks to prove high altitude synchronous satellites for communications and weather forecasting with a three-satellite system to provide worldwide coverage. The 22 200 mile altitude keeps the craft in line with Earth's rotation.
