Doris Jean Hoffman 15 of York Springs will represent Pennsylvania at the National cherry pie baking contest in Chicago February 21 after winning the state title Saturday. Runners up include Jouetta Crusay of Carlisle Rita Sipple of Albion and Marian Sheaffer of Newport. A second item notes Yale will elect Alfred Whitney Griswold as its 16th president replacing Charles Seymour.
The 3214-ton freighter Karhula sank off the Dutch coast after shifting deck cargo, with ten seamen and a stowaway drowned. Seventeen rescued, including Cape Hugh David Groenstrand and two stowaways. the ship carried a load of wood pulp from Finland to France. A five hour battle preceded abandonment one minute before sinking.
Two Cory business places were burglarized with entry through front windows and cash, oil, coats, and rainwear taken at Union Service Station. Holton’s Dairy Bar on East Columbus Avenue was also broken into, with $53 in cash, cigars, and other items stolen. Police checked the sites overnight but found no further damage or suspects.
A 1-year-old wife, Marion de Voll, is held without bail on a murder charge after she allegedly said she submerged her nine-week-old daughter in a bathroom washbowl. The infant, one of twins born December 6, 1949, died. the other twin died at birth. De Voll, from Gohasset, claimed she left home after a quarrel with husband James and had been staying with her parents in Medfield.
Bucknell University in Lewisburg Pa awarded honorary degrees to the wives of recent graduates. President Harace Hildreth announced the action, extending the Ply't degree in a move saluting the spouses supporting graduates. The measure recognizes unnamed wives and marks a notable campus gesture toward longstanding partnerships in education.
Corry chapter of the Red Cross announces a 1950 campaign goal of 6673 dollars with March 1 to 18 as the fund drive period. The chapter plans to raise 1700 for local use while 3972 supports national and international Red Cross work. The Home Service and production departments logged many cases and increased aid to veterans families and local households.
A three inch snowfall blanketed the city after a warm weekend. State highway plows and local crews struggled to clear icy streets as snowfall hampered cinder operations on hills. Weather observer George Mulderick noted temperatures two degrees below freezing overnight.
Rafael Sabatini, 75, the Anglo Italian novelist famed for Captain Blood, died in a Swiss hotel in Adelboden after stomach ailments. His prolific career included The Sea Hawk and The Black Swan, with many works adapted to film. His father was a Russian singer, mother English. naturalized British in 1918.
Washington February 13 Well placed sources say Dean May be named acting chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission to succeed David Lilienthal. Lilienthal plans to leave Wednesday ending long government service. The administration has not yet selected a permanent head and will give President Truman time to pick a suitable successor.
Republicans push new charges of Communist infiltration in the government led by Senators Martin R Par and McCarthy R Wis. McCarthy accuses the State Department of 57 card carrying members and demands firings, linking the Hiss case and alleged Soviet leaks to a broader purge.
A 1200 ton supply ship John Bisrog broke through pack ice to reach Stonington Island and rescued six scientists stranded for over two years. Earlier five were rescued by planes, leaving six aboard the ship. The effort followed reports of the rescuers using ski planes and boats to reach the stranded group.
Tornado outbreaks struck four Southern states causing at least 47 deaths and extensive damage. Reports list fatalities in Shreveport area, grand cane, Texas near Hashim, and communities in Arkansas and Tennessee. Widespread destruction and property losses quoted with varied death tallies and grant totals across multiple towns.
Norfolk Va feb 13 naval court inquiry heard Missouri steersman Beyan E Travis say he knew the ship was going aground but did not report to the captain because it was not his place and the captain was busy. Travis testified the ship slowed and appeared off course near Thimble Shoal while attempting to run an electronic range outside the main channel.
Four area teenagers were injured in a car crash on Route T near Riceville around 6:06 p.m. A truck stalled on a hill was struck, causing the vehicle carrying the youths to overturn. Injured were Ahoew Hurt In, Marguerite Fish, Muline Snappy, and Theodme Chmabe. Police investigated the incident and hospital checks were planned for all riders.
Seven Montana State College students were killed in a traffic crash near Bozeman on February 13. An eighth person died later from injuries. The victims included members of the Sigma Phi fraternity. The group was traveling when their car plunged over a highway embankment near the Northwestern Railroad Bridge. Two others were injured in the wreck.
Murray Goldberg, 27, estranged husband, killed his wife Botella and their one year old son Kenneth at the Bronx Children's Shelter. He fled the scene after firing, leaving an emptied gun and a loaded pistol behind. Police suspect a third gun may have been carried. The shelter, run by the Children's Society, had been a new location in Goldberg's life.
Pittsburgh February 13 Duquesne Light Company told industrial customers they face no more than a week of service before power curtailment. District facilities had borrowed time as coal supplies were scavenged from distant areas amid the ongoing UMW strike and uncertain future conditions.
Senator Ellender, a Democrat from Louisiana, argued the use of Taft Hartley to end the coal strike could cost Democrats in the upcoming congressional elections. He criticized President Truman’s handling while Humphrey noted the move affects American welfare. The dispute centers on invoking the Taft Hartley Act without a national emergency and the political fallout for the party.
A vehicle driven by Francis Edmiston struck a parked Jeep owned by Joseph Canada in front of the Gerry Library at 10 30 Saturday night. Edmiston swerved to avoid an oncoming car after veering from the east curb, causing front end damage to his car and back end damage to the Jeep. Police said a more accurate report was not obtained.
Police probed the death of Michael Midwiz, 27, a Heidelberg steelworker, who died after discovering facial and chest injuries. An autopsy cited shock from multiple contusions to the head face and neck. he died yesterday at Mercy Hospital.
Southern coal producers accept John L. Lewis invitation to resume contract talks as miners in several states refuse to report to work. Reports show 870,000 striking miners, with walkouts across Illinois West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Government warns it may seek contempt if diggers do not return immediately.
