Adverse freight rates hit Pennsylvania coal trade
Governor Pinchot said permanent unemployment of 42000 miners and the loss of 60 million tons of soft coal trade annually result from adverse freight rates. The Greater Pennsylvania Council urged PSC and Interstate Commerce Commission to review rates as the decline affects central and western Pennsylvania, railroads, and related industries. The shift of markets toward distant districts hurts Pennsylvania's access to tidewater ports and New England consumers.
