William H. Jones, 29, of St. Petersburg, was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the beer bottle slaying of a Springdale, Pennsylvania man. Jones pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the October bar death of 23-year-old Sonny Herron after an altercation over a girl. Herron was killed when a broken beer bottle neck was used in the attack.
Marshall Teague, 37, former national stock car racing champion, was killed during a speed run at the new Daytona Beach Speedway yesterday. The accident occurred as he pushed a fast lap early in the day. Teague, a prominent figure in stock car racing, earned national fame in the sport.

Benjamin E. Blum and Howard Silvis, both of Tionesta, were sentenced to two years three months and 28 days in jail plus fines for trout fishing out of season. They were jailed in Forest County after trout measuring 14 and 15 inches were found in a barrel on a pickup truck in Jamestown Township near Marienville. Trout season opens April 15.

A Baltimore area Pennsy passenger train derailed about 10 miles east of Baltimore. Police said rails spread, the engine and first cars left the track, with three main tracks blocked by debris. About 300 passengers were aboard. several were hospitalized, including two heart attack cases. one passenger from Philadelphia reported minor injuries. The train departed Washington at 7 am. next stop was Wilmington.
A nine month old boy, Scott Cercone, suffocated during a blaze on the second floor of the Cercone home in Shady Side. His mother Dorothy and firefighter Donald Swan were treated for minor cuts and burns after attempting to rescue him. Fire started for undetermined reasons and spread to a neighboring house, with total damage estimated at $18,000.
