Senator Russell Long accused five major U S drug manufacturers of an international price fixing conspiracy since 1954. He named Pfizer American Cyanamid Bristol-Myers Upjohn and Squibb, saying drugs cost to produce rose modestly yet price to Americans stayed high. The Justice Department had an outstanding anti trust indictment since 1961 involving Pfizer, American Cyanamid and Bristol-Myers, with no action or comment on Longs speech.
