In a dramatic dawn exchange on a bridge between East and West Berlin, U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers was released from eight Russian prisons and traded for Soviet master spy Rudolf Abel. The swap marks a pivotal Cold War moment as Powers returns home to American soil.
Major Republican leaders from six of nine northwestern Pennsylvania counties back U.S. Senator Hugh Scott for the gubernatorial nomination. Scott, in Oil City, said he would decide next week while stressing party unity. Other candidates mentioned include J Collins McSparran and Judge Robert E Woodside.
The YMCA announces a new dues schedule to take effect March 1 while urging current members to buy during the enrollment drive running through February 26. A Rhodesian federal commission ruled that pilot error caused the DC6B crash that killed United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and 15 others on a Congo peace mission. The aircraft descended too low, struck trees, and crashed near Ndola on September 17. The inquiry found no attack by another aircraft or from the ground.

In Washington a House Democrat proposed federal aid to education shifting shared financed schools to states. Rep Cleveland Bailey outlined a 500 million dollar annual program to let states decide distribution while Kennedy opposes aid to church or private schools. George J Hecht was also present.
CONYERS Ga a fourteen year old girl Dorothy Sue Bradford was convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of Douglas Wayne Henderson sixteen and the stabbing death of his brother Tommy fourteen. A caretaker Charles Byrd twenty was also jailed for life for murder in the Henderson deaths. Jealousy was cited as the motive and prosecutors argued the girl helped arrange the fatal meeting.
In Algona the Kansas City couple Gwen Egel and James Kildow encountered a string of delays before their wedding. Barbershops and photographers were closed on Monday forcing a last minute search for services. A jeweler lent a ring as a temporary token while a doctor announced the blood test results had been misplaced in transit. The bride’s father drove 55 miles to Mason City to secure the church.
The Powers Abel exchange may reflect moves to reduce Cold War hostilities as Khrushchev shows interest in better U S Soviet lines of communication. President Kennedy backs improved contact and the swap appears linked to broader diplomatic efforts amid Soviet Chinese tensions. Continued on Page Two.
Corry volunteers met at the West Ridge Hose Company in Erie to plan the Erie County Firemen's Association old timers convention set for April 14 at St Barnabas Home near North East. Five delegates from each volunteer company may attend, with county volunteers able to buy tickets. Corry attendees included Charles Spiesman, Cecil Carvaugh, Hay Laurie, Rex Apps, Higbaenin, Collier, and Carvaugh. tickets available from Colter.
Warren County School Board adopted a resolution agreeing with an Erie County move to merge Columbus Township and Spring Creek Township into the Corry Area School District. The areas have been in Administrative Unit VII since the 1960s and vote plans were approved earlier in January to submit the merger to voters.
The Powers family and relatives reacted with joy to news of U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers being released in exchange for Rudolf Abel. Mrs Powers spoke of a bursting heart and elation, while his Norton Virginia father said they were tickled to death. The family, awaiting further word, planned to travel to meet him, with Powers having served a 10 year sentence after his 1960 capture.

Francis Gary Powers leaves Vladimir Prison in Moscow after a spy swap. Frederic Leroy Pryor, an American student held in East Germany since August 25, is freed. Abel released to East German officials as Powers heads toward the United States. White House announces the exchange at 3 19 p m. JFK learns of it minutes earlier. Powers had been held since the May 1960 downing of a U 2 over Soviet soil and was sentenced to 10 years after a public espionage trial. The swap follows tensions from the Paris Big Four summit.
Industrialist George Romney announced he will seek the Republican nomination for Michigan governor but will wait to active campaigning until his duties as a constitutional convention delegate are finished. Romney, 54, is president of American Motors Corp. and cited the end of March for the convention’s expected completion. He was flanked by wife and son Mitt at the Detroit news conference.
