Warren Pa Feb 9 The War Department reports that Seth Lindberg brother of Corry Lindberg of Warren has been killed in action in the western European theater. His parents Mr and Mrs Lorenzo Lindberg of Warren R D were notified. Seth had previously been reported a prisoner of Germany. A brother Clifford Lindberg lives on Matt Street.
Allied reports say forces near Salamaua eliminated a Japanese pocket near Wall Airdrome 35 miles southwest of Salamaua while U N air strikes and a submarine attack in New Guinea waters destroyed a Japanese convoy. Dutch mimes bombed and burned large parts of Dobo town and harbor in the Aceh islands.
Senator Downey of California pressed for an immediate halt to military inductions, arguing the nation is already under arms and cannot transport or maintain more troops abroad. He warned that more farm help is needed to avert world wide hunger, as Senator Reynolds supported reexamining manpower demands. A joint session was planned to hear General George C. Marshall.
In London on February 9, Prime Minister Churchill returned from North Africa and the Middle East and prepared a war situation statement and a note on a United Nations war count. Army flying instructor Clifton H. Watrous, 35, plummeted from a damaged plane when controls stuck near Blacksburg, Va. He leaped at about 260 to 300 feet after his student bailed out at 1000 feet. Watrous died instantly. student Mier survived with fractured ribs and shock. Coroner A. M. Showalter said Watrous might have escaped had he remained aboard. The craft, badly damaged, landed on its gear and was taken away.
York Pa Feb Warden Jos eph McClain said a war plant worker walked into the county jail and confessed killing his wife. Poller found the body in the living room with a butcher knife wound. The slain woman, 40, mother of two, had been stabbed and Cassell named as the suspect.
The Women's Central War Activities Committees completed a ward survey listing roughly one hundred rooms and houses ready to house war workers in the city. Committee chairwoman Mrs James A Cassidy announced the rooms will be posted at the Municipal Building headquarters for all interested. The survey, led by Mrs Liv Stowe, involved house to house canvassing to record suitable rooms and apartments aiding plant workers seeking quarters here.

Public school teachers in Rankin staged a sit-down strike today after the Rankin school board rejected a $250 yearly salary increase to cope with higher living costs. About 50 teachers and 1,450 pupils affect Rankin schools. the board, advised by solicitor Leo Eastman, said legal changes from Harrisburg are needed.
Seven men died and three injured when an Army bomber from the Sioux City air base crashed southeast of the base at night. Witnesses said the plane was on fire after it struck a farm two miles east and two miles south of the base.
The House appropriations committee sent a 2,621,102,979 dollar wartime supply bill to speed the Maritime Commission and related offices. Nearly all funds cover war needs, including 887,017,000 for Veterans Administration and 1,289,780,000 for the Maritime Commission. The bill totals 544,208 dollars under budget estimates and 219,909,199 under appropriations for the current fiscal year.
