The Monthly Business Review from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland notes January conditions were unsettled by floods and strikes in autos and plate glass, yet overall activity remained near the recovery peak. Steel output held at high rates, inventories grew, and December orders for machine tools set records as construction and retail activity showed gains. Debits and car registrations rose, while commercial failures stayed at very low levels.
