Phone Rates Might Go Up

HARRISBURG AP Commonwealth Court issued a complex ruling that could raise rates for Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Co customers. The decision centers on $3.5 million in federal taxes Bell paid in 1972 that the Public Utility Commission disallowed in rate calculations. No immediate rate change will occur as the court reviews other lawsuits challenging the PUC's hike. The ruling concerns the tax deduction Bell contested and could influence the fair return formula amid ongoing cases. Federal agents say more moonshine arrests are imminent in East McKeesport near Pittsburgh.
