Williamstown report outlines indictments against former Gov John Fine and 10 others including three coal firms. August J. Memphis, Tenn. AP reports a quiet shift away from racial barriers as 30 downtown eating facilities in department stores, variety stores, and two drugstore chains reopen to all patrons. The change was accomplished without incident yesterday, with some restaurants still segregated.
A Spartansburg woman reported two boxes packed for her overseas husband vanished along the Corry to Sparta road. She found one box containing a dress beside the road near Spartansburg and set out to recover the second. Police were asked to alert her if the other box is found.
Four year old James Troupe was found safe with his mother Bonnie Troupe in Pittsburgh after FBI agents arrested Larry G Kerr, 42, an unemployed Chicago chef, in downtown Pittsburgh. Kerr, charged with kidnapping, claimed he did it to worry James's mother for personal reasons and was held on a $5,000 bond.
President Kennedy asks Congress to create a massive public and corporate funded space network to relay radio, television, and telephone signals worldwide. Public stock exceeding 1 billion dollars would be offered in the Communications Satellite Corporation, with nonpublic secondary shares for participating communications firms. The plan, described in the Communications Satellite Act of 1962, envisions satellites as space relay stations enabling global oceanic telecasts and broad international communications.
The Corry Chamber of Commerce will launch its 1962 program with two meetings. The Civic Affairs Committee will push for passage of the Green River Ordinance and work with City Council on Muster Plan adoption, with officers to be elected from Danner, Christianser, Rickers, Needham, Gould, Tunner, Johnson, Gentilman, McCray, Amy, Earle, and Butters. The Legislative Action Committee will name officers from Clark, Dodi, Seitz, Smiley, Sample, Bliley, and Stowe.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla The John Glenn spaceflight was delayed at least one more day until February 4 to further prepare the Atlas booster and complete additional tests. Officials ordered extra checks on the big booster to ensure readiness for the attempted launch.
German mine collapse traps about 200 miners in an unnamed location. Reports describe a tense rescue effort as officials fear high casualties while authorities in the state tackle related safety and emergency responses.
A large explosion at the Luisenthal coal mine near Saarbrucken traps and kills 56 miners, with 78 injured and 160 to 200 reported missing. About 216 miners are said to have been rescued as fire and cave-ins complicate the search at a depth of 1500 feet.
William Enterline aged 36 testified he began firing to provoke police into killing him amid a downtown Pittsburgh bar incident on December 18. He and Walter Burns, 31, both of Union City, face assault with intent to kill and firearms act charges as jurors weigh whether the pair opened fire after being refused a drink. The gun discharged when a porter grabbed Enterline at close range. Burns allegedly hid his revolver. Enterline cited World War II wounds and a nervous condition as his trigger for suicide by police. Also reported Roy Atwell, 83, vaudeville comedian, died after six weeks illness, with a stage comeback planned for May in New York.
Lt Glenn Peters of the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department was killed near Westfield last night when his car left the snow covered Route 20 and struck a tree. He was 39, alone in the vehicle, not on duty, and had served eight years as sheriff and two as lieutenant.

Six Corry Area teachers join a Penn State extension class on elementary school reading and reading problems in secondary school. The inaugural session is at Corry High School on Monday with candidates from Talon City, Clymer, Findley Lake and Mayville.
Mrs Edna Mae Myer was killed in a head on collision about a quarter mile north of here yesterday afternoon. Robert E Myer son of Mrs Myer drove an auto skidding across the center of the road and collided with a coal truck. James A Stright 58 of Sheathleyville escaped injury. The Myer youth and Mrs Dena Victim, who lived in the same Meadville home, were admitted to Mercer Cottage Hospital with Buffalo at the time of the accident
