Sugar Rationing to Use Schools as Neighborhood Agents
In Washington a new sugar rationing plan will begin in a few weeks with consumer registration in neighborhood schoolhouses. Price Administrator Leon Berderson says schoolteachers will collect and bundle stamp book applications for every adult and child in the county. Officials believe neighborly gossip could deter hoarding as boards will issue stamp books and enforce limits. The idea aims to leverage social pressure over harsh penalties to curb sugar buying.
