In Atlanta, restaurateur Lester Maddox, first civil contempt conviction under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, faces 200 dollar daily fines until he signs a statement agreeing to serve all races. Judge Hooper set the schedule and said the contempt could be purged after 60 days with the statement. King seeks talks with President Johnson on broader civil rights legislation after a five day Selma jail spell and widespread arrests.
A Chilean DC plane carrying 75 passengers and seven crew crashed and burned shortly after takeoff from Santiago en route to Buenos Aires. About three miles from La Valdes and 50 miles from Santiago the disaster left no immediate survivors. The flight planned stops in Montevideo and Buenos Aires.
Thomas W. Barr, a 69 year old retiree, donated 256 477 dollars to Scio and Jewett village schools. He sold some stock to cover 54000 dollars of the estate and transferred 7615 shares his brother Harry amassed over 54 years. Barr, living on a modest pension, found no will but a note indicating the plan to aid local children.
Mrs John F Kennedy arrived in Acapulco to join her sister Princess Lee Radziwill for a vacation at the Pacific Coast resort. The princess and her husband came from London for a two day stay. Democratic counterpart Otis Morse warned of protests and urged lawmakers to heed court precedent while testifying at a reapportionment hearing.
Tyler Texas AP authorities charged a small bespectacled man viewed as a local hero with taking nearly 400000 from his one man bank in Winona. McClung president and sole staff member posted bond and went free after waiving preliminary hearing as bank closes. FDIC investigator cites false entries totaling 380392 over years. Bank directors, all relatives of McClung, announce liquidation and FDIC plans to cover up to 10000 per depositor.
Pennsylvania report reveals Jenny Schaeffer of Benton Columbia County, a March of Dimes boy, will undergo surgery. Doctors say he has been admitted to Gelsinger Medical Center in Danville yesterday.
Soviet Premier Kosygin arrives in Hanoi for a four day visit with North Vietnamese leaders amid talks with China in Peking. Western observers expect an offer of military supplies in exchange for restraint in South Viet Nam. US officials deny any confirmed Soviet weapons plans.
State Senator William Lesler tells The Journal the Columbus Dam remains viable and could be rebuilt for under a quarter of a million dollars. In Warsaw a celebration marked Wladyslaw Gomulka turning 60 with a testimonial from PAP praising his name work thought and activity. The Polish Communist party hosted the event highlighting his leadership and long service within the state.
Six Randolph Seed Co employees led by president Robert Lilienthal picketed the State Bank of Randolph for about seven hours after the bank refused a $50,000 loan. Lilienthal said operations would resume Monday and claimed the company has $150,000 in assets with $80,000 in debts while noting strong credit and recent seed sales. Addison Crowley, bank president, declined to discuss relations with the customer.
World War I and Korean War veterans will feel nostalgia at Page 4 of today’s Journal where wartime cartoons by Bill Mauldin appear. Mauldin, the GI cartoonist, is in South Viet Nam chronicling GI life as the war unfolds. The Viet Nam cartoons begin in The Journal on February 15.
Singer Fearl Bailey, 46, admitted to Mt Sinai hospital in Hollywood with severe heart strain, showed considerable improvement. Doctors say her general condition is good and she needs rest, with a possible return to normal schedule in about two weeks.
President Johnson's South Vietnam envoy McGeorge Bundy prepared meetings with leaders of four Vietnamese religious groups at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. He had earlier spoken with Lt. Gen. Nguyen Khanh after Khanh ousted Premier Tran Van Huong on January 27. Leaders invited include Cao Dai head Tran Quang Binh Catholic Archbishop Paul Nguyen Van Binh and Hoa Hao head Luong Trong Thuong along with Buddhist figures Thich Tien Minh and Tran Thuan. Two senior Buddhists Thich Tri Quang and Thich Tam Chau were not scheduled for a meeting. The session aims to address Buddhist Catholic tensions and the regime's instability following the Diem era.
Rogers Structural Steel Co won the first Blood Drive Trophy for the highest donor percentage at a Red Cross Bloodmobile visit in Corry. Of 62 employees, 14 percent donated, besting McInnes Steel 13 of 204, CJ Dunn 80 of 572, and Raymond Manufacturing 24 of 562. Other firms and local groups also participated as total donations reached 130 pints from 136 donors.
