Iron shortage hits pig iron foundries amid rising demand
Confidential reports from 82 foundries show about the same share of total pig iron as 1941, but under 20 percent of plants have full supplies. Of 2 casting plants, 14 get full, 6 reach 70 to 99 percent, 16 have 60 to 62 percent, 2 under 60 percent. 9 started since 1941, 3 using all Semap, 3 out of business. 67 surviving foundries now need 23 051 tons monthly, up from 18 788 in 1941, a 20.8 percent shortage. Multiple factors complicate the outlook as scrap supply remains critical.
