No Assurance That Athletes Will Be Deferred From Draft
Washington reports that professional sports including baseball escaped being deemed nonessential for the draft as the commission’s list excludes sportsmen from immediate deferment. WMC Chairman Paulonetime, a former sandlot player, says football and baseball are desirable but not essential, predicting that about 10 in 14 men aged 18 to 6 will serve by year’s end. Other officials say no decision has been made on nondeferrable lists and warn speculation remains guesswork.
