Arrest Att'y For Meredith On Sex Charge
Jackson Mississippi AP reports civil rights attorney William L Higgs faced prosecution on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Higgs a 28 year old white Mississippian was arrested after a northern youth alleged inappropriate sexual conduct. He was released on 500 dollar bond. Higgs helped defend Jamies Meredith a Negro student at Ole Miss and led congressional campaigns for two Negroes last summer. He filed a federal suit to admit Dewey Greene Jr to the university. If the trial on February 11 proceeds, it will occur before Hinds County Judge Russell Moore. Higgs would receive the 1963 Lasker Civil Liberties Award in New York. He refused further comment saying it would be prejudicial. An officer said the 16 year old involved in a Jan 29 car accident had been using the car without consent, per Higgs.
