Twenty years ago a column from the Journal Chronicle hints at a New York warning, Brooklyn rumors, and a mix of names such as Drown, Throoklyn, MM, Tolar, Tourpa, Datynon, and Terfer. The fragmentary text references Virginia and Strmeonn, with mentions of Sherwarty and a frontier canny scene.
The British labor government faces its first big test as the locomotive and firemen strike ends after a brief stoppage. Trade Union Congress mediation helped reach a compromise, with unions and railroad companies yielding to a measured settlement. The episode suggests new labor influence on national policy and a cautious, united approach to international issues.
The piece discusses Charles D. Wotcott and the American for the Advancement of Science debating whether science or religion should govern truth and life. It argues neither pure science nor dogmatic religion alone suffices, calling for a balanced view that respects inquiry and faith.
The article notes an unexpected but welcome proposed income tax reduction effective soon, with Congress aiming to base changes on Secretary Melon’s recommendations. It discusses timing, quarterly payments due March 15, and the Ways and Means Committee’s plan to reduce taxes for 1924, signaling broader relief and stimulus for business.
Fog bound crash at the Hore Stow plant near Erie injured five as two trolley cars collided. Motorman Joseph Reiser attempted to stop but could not avoid impact with a following car. No fatalities reported though passengers sustained minor injuries amid foggy early morning conditions.
A garbled OCR narrative mentions a bandit and police chase with references to Sime AYS and Orange Cal thieves. It touches on a theft of $1000 of pepper, a dance scene, and political notes about George Christian on the Federal Trade Commission. Pervasive errors limit clarity.
A garbled report describes an oil well in Armstrong County near New Bethlehem. It notes depth reaching 227 feet with sand, initial production, and a later stop at about 3707 feet, mentioning past drilling near the area and a gas company involved.
Troopers conducted a major booze raid at Waterford, detaining several individuals and seizing liquor. The operation involved Corporal Duslavey and Private Fitzsimons, with searches at the home of a Kent by Tatar Ninuty after a wagon stop. Evidence points to a large illegal shipment and cross border trafficking links.
England appears to recognize limited pact as Russian Soviet involvement is questioned. A fragmentary report notes a gas project near Silver Creek with erroneous names and uncertain figures, mentioning Jaren Wentiof and Lip Republic Gry Co in a hazy village context.
Garland notes describe a suspected bootlegger crossing state lines with a New York plate, details on his vehicle and plans, plus local anecdotes about farms, horse shoemaking, and a farmer bringing horseshoes to George Cochran blacksmith shop. The piece mentions Garland residents Guy Mays and Howard Jordan driving toward the Texas border and humor about road conditions and travel near Youngsville.
A disjointed OCR snippet references the Penn Public Service and Bayne corporation amid talk of bringing electrical current to Garland in early spring. It mentions a transformer or dam and a large power flow potential, with vague notes on machinery like washing machines and refrigerators.
