3000 Acres Returning to Cropland in Erie County

Erie County soil experts report about 3000 acres now in grass trees or noncrop uses will be converted to cropland for the 1974 growing season. About 800 acres changed last fall with the rest slated for change next spring. Most new cropland will grow corn wheat or other cash crops. However many acres are on fragile Class IV soils and 300 acres on Class VI and VII soils which need strict conservation practices to prevent erosion. Farmers are urged to seek on the spot guidance from the Erie County Conservation District to balance higher yields with soil and water protection.
