Navy to Build Nearly $1 Billion LHA Assault Ships
The Navy plans nearly $1 billion in new battleship size amphibious assault ships, LHAs, to carry Marines, helicopters and landing craft. Proposals for the first LHAs cost about $123 million each, with design choice in four months. One LHA funded in fiscal 1969, more planned next year, aiming for four or five overall. LHAs would displace about 40,000 tons, span 700 feet, and carry a Marine battalion of 1,800 plus gear, 30 helicopters, tanks, and boats via a floodable well for direct beach embarkation and helicopter support. Major rivals include General Dynamics Quincy, Litton Advanced Mavor, and Newport News Shipbuilding.
