Fire destroys United Brethren church in North Center street
A defective furnace pipe started a blaze early this morning that completely destroyed the United Brethren in Christ church on North Center street. Damage is estimated at 14,000 with over two thirds covered by insurance. Five men remained at the scene by 2:15 p.m. as flames raged through brick veneer construction, leaving only rear and front walls. Firemen battled near zero temperatures, using tons of water to quell the fire that collapsed the roof and loft. The fire was first observed by Toy Rickerton, who smelled smoke while shoveling near the residence south of the church. Initial reports credited early responders Orth MC Hillburg and Charles Hubert with aiding in salvage of hymnals. Willam Olds and Wilson Duane, the janitor and a worker, had left the building minutes before discovery, noting furnace trouble in recent weeks. The blaze rapidly spread to the front tower after reaching the blind attic. Continued on Page Eight.
