White House peace mission widens to Canada Vatican Warsaw visit noted

President Johnson intensifies a broad peace effort in Vietnam with a secret Ottawa meeting between McGeorge Bundy and Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson. Washington AP reports a proposed overhaul of income tax withholding could raise deductions for higher earners while lowering those for the poor. The change would shift toward marginal rates, aligning withholding with actual tax, and may be used as an inflation control tool akin to 1964.

Seven Feet Of Snow Hits Sierras

Snow and heavy rain swept the western third of the nation slowing travel and flooding streets from Ventura County to Los Angeles. Mountain areas reported over a foot of snow while the Sierra Nevadas and Cascades saw four to seven feet on peaks and passes. Two rain related fatalities occurred. warm southerly winds kept temperatures well above normal from the Rockies to the Appalachians.

Savings and Loan Pays Record Dividend Today

The Copry Savings and Loan Association announced the largest semi annual dividend in history. A total of 104,300 was paid with 10,300 in checks to 125 depositors and 24,000 credited to about 2,800 accounts. Homer Bulard, manager, said the dividend total is up about 2,700 from the previous high. Payments occur twice yearly at four percent per year.

Burglars Hit Union City Sports Club

Union City State Police investigate a burglary at the Union City Sportsmen's Club between December 23 and December 24. Trooper Elmer Schifke reports a broken door lock, with about 100 dollars worth of shotgun shells, a single-shot shotgun, and various snack items stolen. Club president Raymond Gocal alerted officials after visiting the club to check on supplies.

Glorious Life Couple To Mark 80 Years Wed

Ole Sholberg aged 103 and his wife Otila 101 of Fergus Falls Minnesota celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary next Wednesday. They recall a peaceful marriage with eight children and a shared life built from a Norway childhood to a farm, church work, and a radio service at Bethlehem Lutheran. The Rev Otto Dale notes they face death without fear, calling their life long and glorious.

Erie County approves six year road improvement plan

Erie County commissioners announce a six year road improvement program with a 50 000 start in the next budget and a total estimated cost of 250 000 covering 144 miles. The plan emphasizes upgrading existing roads rather than building new highways and relies on liquid fuels funds. It includes an outer belt road around Erie from Lake City to North East Township and projects on Route 5 Route 8 Route 18 Route 6N plus Erie Corry road with phased State Highway Department involvement.

High drug error rate found in hospitals in study

Berkeley reporting on research shows errors in hospital drug administration are common. Kenneth Barker of the University of Arkansas Medical Center notes errors range from fatal mistakes to wrong timing or brand changes. Democrat Set As Solicitor For Maclver

Erie county prothonotary elect Alexander MacIvor announced he will appoint Democrat William Byrne as solicitor for the prothonotary’s office. Byrne, brother of Howard Carney, will earn 1100 dollars and is expected to keep the school district post. Incumbent solicitor Fred Jones, a lifelong Republican, said he did not actively seek the job.
