Bemis, 2, of Corry, Tenn ., arrested on a federal charge of interstate transportation of a stolen car. He was picked up in Huntingdon, Tenn., and jailed in Carroll County. Beardsley reported loaning the car and Bemis was overdue on sentencing in Erie County. Federal prosecutors may pursue the case in Tennessee or return him to Erie after sentencing.
Corry residents donated 82 pints to the Red Cross Blood program during the second Bloodmobile visit at the Veterans of Foreign Wars club. The all day session drew 88 donors, with 93 scheduled. James St George praised the Beta Sigma Phi sorority phone campaign and VFW volunteers for the success.
A fast-moving passenger train struck a car here early today, killing four occupants. The deceased are Elmer Helser, 30, the driver, and three passengers Edwin Kurschenmann, 80, Tommy Sweetland, 13, and Wilbert Beck, 18. Goldie Clark a 28 year old Royal Oak resident was pinned in a wrecked car for six and a half hours after a ditch collision on a busy Mount Clemens highway. Water covered her waist as motorists passed. Chrysler missile alan workers freed her and she was taken to a hospital in critical condition with fractures shock and exposure.
Union City man Robert Olmstead, 31, was arrested at 4 am by State Police at the Lawrence Park barracks as he exited a North East service station he had tried to burglarize. Troopers James Smith and Richard Sullivan tracked him from a warm motor. Olmstead admitted stealing two tires from another North East business earlier, and will be charged with burglary.
In Los Angeles a wave swept in while three boys and a man fished. One boy drowned as his father Timmy Jenkins, grieving father of the drowned youth, spoke of his loss. Dan Yarbor and Bob Coddington tried to help but were driven back by the tide while Jimmy Coddington cried for help before being swept away.
