Erie County court hires law clerk without notice
Two Erie County judges hired a part time law clerk for five county judges with budgeted funds of 2,500 per clerk, without prior commissioners approval. Commissioner Weir condemned the move, noting a required court-order notification process. President Judge Carney later issued the order, and the clerk began work as plans for an additional clerk emerged. Commissioners argued judges, as state officials, lack authority to hire county employees without approval.

Welfare Cheating Incidence Drops in Erie County
A report to State Welfare Secretary Helene Wohlgemuth by the auditor general shows a continued drop in ineligible public assistance recipients in Erie County. Fiscal year 1972 73 ineligibility is 7.8 percent, down from 10.2 percent the prior year and 12.9 percent in 1971. An ineligible case means the grant exceeds entitlement, from 10 cents to the full amount. Secretary Wohlgemuth credits this to applying sound business procedures and new methods like project SWEEP reducing fraud and error.
