Fake Groups Kept Buckley Backers Secret

A maze of dummy campaign committees funneled over 400000 in late money to Conservative James L. Buckley and kept donor identities hidden through fronts like League of Middle American Women and Americans for Honesty in Politics. Buckley campaign manager David R. Jones said the groups concealed donor names. Ambassadors from England to the Netherlands contributed to GOP Senate races via a fundraising operation led by Jack A. Gleason, who declined comment. Jones asserted Buckley had no White House links and that some donations came from loyal New York Republicans who avoided tying their names to a third party bid. In Bedford, Ruth M. Miller, 64, died when her car struck a bridge abutment and hit a tractor-trailer. the truck driver was uninjured.
