Colemans Band of Union City Faces Slow Demise of a Local Tradition

The Coleman Band in Union City traces its 1880s origin to Patrick Coleman’s pledge of funding and a shared passion for music. Founded 1883, the group grew with members from nearby towns, performed in parks and operas, and even collaborated with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Over 1,000 players have worn the name, but modern tastes threaten the band’s survival as nostalgia fights to keep a classic American musical tradition alive.
