Narrow Escape For Man As Gas Bursts Street
A Pennsylvania Telephone Corp employee, A Wiles of 427 Washington Ave, escaped serious injury when accumulated gas exploded beneath Sycamore Street in Osprey. He was splicing a new power cable in a telephone conduit entered through a manhole near the Quaker State oil refinery building. The blast lifted a manhole cover about 15 to 20 feet high and caused a low roar that shook nearby buildings. Wiles suffered facial lacerations and was treated by a physician before returning home.
