Minimum wage rises for millions on New Year’s Day
Washington AP reports the federal minimum wage increases to 2.30 per hour on January 1, 1977, making about 4 million workers eligible for raises. The change, part of the 1974 amendments, affects farm workers, domestics, local government employees, retail clerks and millions more across nonfarm sectors, with 57.4 million workers covered and over 53 million already earning above the new floor. The plan also raises many workers to 2.20 or 2.30 in staged steps through 1978, including laundry, construction, hospitals, schools, and government employees.
