Body of Austrian Man Found Lying in Waterditch
Deer Warren Coroner Ed Lowery and Sheriff HL Ritchie were summoned to Cherry Grove Township near Sheffield at 10 20 Sunday morning after the body of Andrew Stanfat an Austrian about 60 years old was found face down in a ditch pool along the road from Gill Hill to Vandergrift Corners. Neighbors found him and alerted police. Initial foul play suspicion faded as investigators noted mud on clothing and mud trails. A walking stick lay nearby and the man’s body showed injuries. Officials concluded he was perhaps on his way to or from Sheffield and was overtaken by illness, crawling on hands and knees before collapsing with face in water.
