Christmas Day highway deaths spark Pennsylvania scrutiny
A series of Christmas Day crashes in western Pennsylvania drew attention to road hazards as authorities reported multiple fatalities and noted links to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In Bradford County, Judge William M. Rosenfield struck down a 1949 law, ordering county commissioners to repay 500 dollars each from extra expense allowances. Similar cases were filed in Crawford County, where auditors had surcharged 500 dollars per official. In other local notes, Cochran High School workers received 106000 dollars in year-end bonuses, and an escaped convict Louis Green was extradited back to Ohio to face burglary charges. Police investigated a collision at East Main and Concord but found no drivers’ details. A railroad mail train change ended as the No. 581 service completed its westbound run. Several inmates received Christmas holiday releases in Crawford County jail. A car wedged on Gates Street crossing prompted a police response with owner L. E. Hepler identified. Indiana State Teachers College Choir prepared a KDKA broadcast, featuring Miss Jean Marie Johnston. Parky Mento was killed in a St Clair crash near Pottsville, with two others injured and Sgt Smayda possibly fracturing a kneecap.
