State motor police reported by Arthur Hackenberg of Harborcreek. An employee at the General Electric Co. plant and his wife and two sons were in the vehicle. Mrs Hackenberg formerly Miss Marie Barressi of Corry.
A Japanese force has landed on Wake Island, the Navy announced. Enemy units, of unspecified strength, landed this morning on the small Pacific atoll where Marines have repelled repeated air and naval assaults. The garrison endured a strong air attack yesterday in which several enemy planes were shot down.
M Ray Greene general manager of the Cory Water Supply Company died at Corry hospital at 1 40 this morning after a period of ill health. Born November 25 1880 in Jamestown he moved to Corry as a boy and spent years at Climax Manufacturing before joining the water utility twenty years ago. He was active in Kiwanis Coin Luke and various clubs and recently served as district chairman of Public Water Supply Defense. Survived by wife Alba and half-brother Chanel E. Davis. Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal church Friday at 2 PM with burial in Pine Grove cemetery.
War Department reports Japanese reinforcements pouring into the Lingayen gulf coast area north of Manila as fighting grows fiercer. Bombing and attack planes back landings while American Philippine forces show initial successes near Santo Tomas. fighting spreads along eastern Lingayen gulf and in five Luzon areas including Davao.
British Middle East command said imperial forces reached the Gulf of Sirte south of Benghazi and reinforcements moving across the Libyan desert were increasing pressure on the axis stronghold. A mobile column raided Agedabia and destroyed 27 aircraft, while the wider axis retreat toward Benghazi continued amid scattered reports of casualties and wreckage.
