Several houses cling to a 120 foot cliff at Rocky Point Long Island as Long Island Sound erosion carves away the embankment. Three homes have been abandoned as the unstable bank threatens collapse into the sea.
Governor Shapp signed a package raising Pennsylvania income tax to 2.2 percent and adding 20 to 40 dollars yearly from the average family. The plan increases corporate net income tax to 10.5 percent and imposes a 4.5 percent gross receipts tax on electricity sent out of state, funded by $14 million in budget cuts and further reductions to state-related and private universities.
Corry based state police and the Elgin Beaverdam Volunteer Hose Company rescued tanker driver Carl Marcy after his kerosene tanker slid off Route 89 and rolled. He was pinned an hour before help arrived. The tanker, fully loaded, rested on its roof. Marcy was treated and released at Corry Memorial Hospital.
AP Seattle report details reporter Richard Buck buying 60 items for 4.24 dollars, with many items priced at a dime or less. Washington AP reports winter storms and high winds slow Christmas mail with Chicago O Hare transfers disrupted and routes rerouted. Postal officials warn delivery by Christmas depends on weather as heavy volume remains about the same as 1976.
Enraged by a pregnant hostage threat a Filipino gunman who held 14 Filipino hostages at a Subic Bay bank for 48 hours was beaten to death by the captives. Navy officials said the gunman died of a massive skull fracture two hours after Marines found him unconscious. Hostages included nine bank employees, four auditors and one businessman. two injured were the bank manager and a man bitten on the arm. The bank, inside the base gate, served Filipinos employed on the base and contained about 140000 in local currency.
